About Dr Ian Baxter

Upper Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Surgeon

Dr Ian Baxter is an Australian trained general surgeon with a special interest in upper gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric surgery and laparoscopic hernia surgery.  He has been a fellow of The Royal Australian College of Surgeons since 1995 and has resided on the Sunshine Coast since 1998.  Dr Baxter completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland in the 1980s and went on the train at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, where he completed his surgical training.

After fellowship, he had post-fellowship training in the United Kingdom at Bath and Edinburgh in upper gastrointestinal surgery.  In 1997 he returned to Queensland to take the job of Director of Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Brisbane but has always had a longstanding goal to live on the Sunshine Coast and settled with his family in 1998.

Dr Baxter is the first person to start performing bariatric surgery on the Sunshine Coast shortly after arrival and has been consistently doing this for the past 20 years.  Past appointments have been to the Younger Fellows Committee at college counsel.  He has been on the Medical Advisory Committee at the Buderim Private Hospital, The Surgical Services Committee at the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital and The Medical Advisory Committee at Kawana Private Hospital.

He is married with 4 daughters, most of whom are now adults and pursuing their own life paths. Dr Baxter lives rurally and his daughters have strong interests in horse riding.  He enjoys his time outdoors and enjoys the pursuit of gardening.  He is an avid beachgoer, he enjoys the ocean and surfing.  He enjoys music and he has been known to play in a local band, but most of his spare time is spent with his family.  He enjoys international travel when he can.

Laparoscopic Banding

This band is placed around your stomach in such a way that the stomach is divided into two parts: a small 25ml capacity pouch above the band; with the remaining stomach below the band.

This has the effect of making the stomach smaller so that you eat less food yet still feel full. It also puts pressure on the nerves in the upper part of your stomach so that they signal your brain to tell you that you are not feeling hungry.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Gastric Sleeve surgery involves removing the lateral two-thirds of the stomach with a stapling device. The procedure is done using keyhole or laparoscopic surgery. The remaining stomach is more like a tube or ‘sleeve’ than a sac.

It is estimated that the remaining stomach has about a 100 to 200ml capacity. It works by making you feel “full” sooner, therefore you will eat less.

Omega Loop Mini Bypass

An Omega-Loop Gastric bypass is a procedure (also known as a Mini-Bypass) is a procedure where the stomach is divided into two sections, creating a smaller stomach pouch, then the first part of the small intestine is bypassed, reducing the amount that can be absorbed.

Essentially, the operation aims to reduce the amount of food you can eat (due to the smaller stomach pouch) as well as reduce the number of calories that are absorbed from the food you eat (due to bypassing the first part of the small intestine).
